ANDREWS AIR FORCE BASE, Md. (CNS) -- Hundreds of military personnel and their families and dozens of students from a nearby Catholic high school perched on bleachers set up at the edge of the tarmac at Andrews Air Force Base to greet Pope Benedict XVI on his first U.S. visit as pope.

Staffers at Catholic Channel Say They’re Excited to Cover Pope


NEW YORK (CNS) -- The Catholic Channel of Sirius Satellite Radio may be a new kid on the block in the world of Catholic media, but it is taking a grown-up approach to covering Pope Benedict XVI's April 15-20 visit to the United States.

The channel, a joint effort of Sirius and the Archdiocese of New York, plans to provide listeners with uninterrupted live coverage of the pope's appearances at liturgies and other major events in Washington and New York. Masses at Yankee Stadium in New York and Nationals Stadium in Washington will be broadcast live.

President Bush to Greet Pope Benedict Upon Arrival at Andrews


WASHINGTON—President and Mrs. George Bush will greet Pope Benedict XVI, April 15, when he arrives at Andrews Air Force Base for a six-day visit to the United States that will take him to Washington and New York City.

The pope is expected to arrive at four in the afternoon on an Alitalia flight dubbed “Shepherd One.” Accompanying him in the plane will be several Vatican officials and more that 60 members of the Vatican Press Corps.

Cardinal Says Papal Visit, Like One in '79, Will Be 'Time of Grace'

WASHINGTON (CNS) -- The 1979 visit of Pope John Paul II to the nation's capital "was a great gift," as will be Pope Benedict XVI's April 15-17 trip to Washington, said Cardinal William W. Baum.

The cardinal, now retired, was Washington's archbishop from 1973 to 1980 and hosted Pope John Paul's visit.
He recalled that those who had to prepare for it had only a short time to get ready.
"We only had a couple of months!" he told the Catholic Standard, Washington's archdiocesan newspaper, in an interview at his residence. He chuckled and said, "Looking back, I don't know how we did it."

Then he answered, "With God's grace!"
