• 9:15 a.m. Mass for priests, deacons and members of religious orders at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in the heart of New York City.
• 4:30 p.m. The Holy Father will meet with young Catholics, including 50 youngsters with a range of disabilities, at St. Joseph Seminary in Yonkers. Thousands of young people, including hundreds of seminarians, are expected to participate in a rally/prayer service and to hear the pope speak.

Singers Who Will Perform For Pope Consider It A Singular Experience

NEW YORK (CNS) -- Performing for a papal event is not just another gig, even for those whose names are usually rendered in boldface type.

Headline entertainers who will sing for the crowds assembled to greet the pope at St. Joseph's Seminary in Yonkers and at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx spoke of the opportunity as a singular experience and one they are eagerly anticipating.

Kelly Clarkson, 25, a pop singer who gained national attention by winning the inaugural "American Idol" competition in 2002, will sing several of her standards for the youths awaiting the pope in Yonkers April 19.

Pope Expected to Encourage Vocations in Visit to New York Seminary

WASHINGTON (CNS) -- St. Joseph's Seminary in Yonkers, N.Y., one of the stops for Pope Benedict XVI during his three-day visit to New York this April, is no stranger to the pope or his predecessor, Pope John Paul II.

In 1988, years before he was pope, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger gave a talk at the seminary about the study of Scripture. Seven years later, Pope John Paul II spoke to seminarians on the 40-acre campus commonly known as Dunwoodie for its location in the Dunwoodie section of Yonkers, just a few miles north of New York City.

Cardinal Egan Says He Looks Forward to Pope Developing Theme of Hope

NEW YORK (CNS) -- Pope Benedict XVI will emphasize the theme of hope -- and what that means to Catholics -- on his upcoming visit to New York and Washington, said Cardinal Edward M. Egan of New York.

"It's going to be interesting to see how he develops it," the cardinal told Catholic New York, the archdiocesan newspaper, during an hourlong interview at his residence.

Noting that Pope Benedict addressed that topic in his most recent encyclical, "Spe Salvi" (on Christian hope), the cardinal said he expects that on the U.S. trip the pope will continue to emphasize "that about which we're hopeful" and the role of hope in "strengthening our moral and spiritual life."
